  15. A Nod to The Church

  17. <p>    For nearly four decades the Roman Catholic Church had no
  18. legal status in a country that is more than 90% Catholic. Last
  19. week, however, Poland became the first East bloc nation to
  20. recognize the church. The parliament approved a law that permits
  21. the church to operate businesses, schools and hospitals, and to
  22. run radio and television stations. The action came in the wake
  23. of a power-sharing agreement reached between the government of
  24. General Wojciech Jaruzelski and the Solidarity labor movement,
  25. which has strong ties to the church. Catholic leaders have
  26. played a key role in negotiating the agreement with Solidarity
  27. and the promise of relatively open elections, set for next
  28. month.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>    The establishment of formal diplomatic relations between
  31. Warsaw and the Vatican is expected to come next. That would be
  32. the first such link between the Holy See and a Soviet bloc
  33. government. It would also provide a capstone to a campaign for
  34. mutual recognition dear to the heart of Pope John Paul II, the
  35. only Polish-born Pontiff in church history.
